His voice was level but for that instant she heard in it the same quaver and weight she felt in her own. Something about that was bitter sweet. Could he still feel something for her? If he did, was it something he could even let himself feel given what had happened? Was she unforgiveable?
She frowned when he said that, what could he have that was her’s? When he drew out the tags she knew instantly what it was. The fact that he’d kept them and kept them with his brothers tags was overwhelming. Cadmon had been the most important person in his life, he’d idolized his brother and grieved him daily. She realized she’d added to that and it broke her heart.
“Please, don’t.” Her hand again went to the phantom pain in her abdomen, fingers curling over the healed scar feeling numb. “I’m sorry.” She backed away, shaking her head. “I’m sorry.”
She turned and walked back toward the entry of the park, she broke into a run with tears welling in her eyes, she didn’t stop until she had found her quarters. She hit the wall and slid to the floor, arms going around her knees. For the first time in decades she wept, and the well of tears would not be stopped.
